It seems that lots of people remember the "Vietnam bridge". A visitor to the "Preserving our Village Past" event from Bingley said that from the 1950s onward, left-wing graffiti was posted on the bridge by Walter Greaves, the one-armed, British endurance cycling champion (see Wikipedia entry), who lived at Craven Forge. Apparently, it was well known in the district who was responsible, but he was never caught.
